In the interview, Obama said he had long supported civil unions but his position on same-sex marriages had been evolving because of the powerful traditions and religious beliefs attached to the word marriage.
Obama said he had been swayed in particular by considering the service of gays and lesbians in the US military. "At a certain point I just concluded, for me personally, it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same-sex couples should be able to get married," Obama said.

[Just a thought on the whole thing: I guess those potential voters who consider this a salient issue and are against gay marriage wouldn't vote for Obama for a number of other reasons and are lost to the campaign anyway; however, there is the danger of mobilizing voters for Mitt Romney - those who consider him not conservative enough but now consider this a reason to vote against Obama - as Romney's move to announce his opposition to same-sex couples being able to adopt children would suggest]
